1st Annual TV Awards: Part 6

1st Annual TV Awards: Part 6

Best Comedy Series- Cable Networks

Nominees:

- Grace & Frankie (Netflix)
The concept of this series is only bested by it's casting choices. Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda play complete opposites who's husbands leave them for each other. It's interesting to see this series revolve around the older generation.
- Ground Floor (TBS)
Sure the boss is a little over the top but the younger characters and their relationships is what makes this show great.

- Younger (TV Land)
Although I doubt the concept of this series (a 40 year old woman pretending to be 26 to get a job) would work in real life, it leads to many hilarious situations.

- Young & Hungry
This series never fails to make me laugh through it's slightly exaggerated story lines, wonderful cast and Emily Osment who really makes this show stand out.

Winner: Young & Hungry

The slightly exaggerated story lines and the sometimes more mature jokes and innuendos, make this show fantastic to watch. Emily Osment is outstanding and the other characters fit together and are able to work off of each other.

Best Drama Series- Cable Networks

Nominees:

- Bloodlines (Netflix)
I was hooked on this series from the end of the first episode which shows a major plot twist I hadn't seen coming. The last few episodes of the first season are addictive and I was actually on the edge of my seat for the last 20 minutes of episode 10. Fantastic first season and a great one to binge watch.

- Downton Abbey
One of the reasons I love this show so much is wide array of characters. There are so many story lines going on at the same time which always keeps everything interesting and entertaining. Especially when the story lines intersect with each other.

- iZombie (CW)
This series turned out to be MUCH better than I had anticipated. Imagine Veronica Mars meets Angel meets Buffy. The ending of every episode leaves you with a twist that keeps you longing to watch the next episode. I also appreciate that they intermix "cop" story line with series long story line so it's not just 50 minutes of solving a crime and then the last 10 of forwarding on the series plot.

- Legends
I was pretty surprised with how much I liked this series considering before I had started it I was pretty convinced that I would only be able to see Ned Stark in Sean Bean. Five or so minutes into the first episode, I forgot all about Ned Stark. It has the right mix of drama, suspense and action, plus it always leaves you with questions.

- Masters of Sex
This season we watched went from their hospital clinic to their own clinic in an African-American neighborhood where they weren't welcomed. Some of the secondary characters (like Betty) really stepped it up with their extra screen time. This series continues to have fantastic writing, interesting characters and some fantastic guest stars (Allison Janney & Beau Bridges!)

Winner: Bloodlines

For me, it really came down to Bloodlines and iZombie but in the end Bloodlines won because it's a series that wasn't tailor made for me (unlike iZombie which was written by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas). I haven't seen Sissy Spacek since Carrie, Kyle Chandler since Friday Night Lights, Linda Cardellini since Freaks & Geeks and Chloe Sevigny since Big Love. The whole cast plays off each other fantastically and I can't wait to see what happens in season 2.

Best Dramady Series- Cable Networks

Nominees:

- House Of Lies
This season changed a little bit from previous ones featuring many flashbacks of Marty in prison. We see Jeannie struggle to deal with the fact that she's going to be a mother, Rosco struggles from the fact that his dad spent so much time in prison and the company go on a financial roller coaster by backing some pretty unstable characters.

- Shameless
Shameless really has it all. A fantastic cast (including all the kids!), dramatic situations, comedic relief and and great writers. After it felt like it was starting to lag and repeat back in season three, they stepped up their game with season four and made season five one of their best ones yet!

- Togetherness
This series gave a fresh take on the stale concept of a marriage in trouble. With a great cast, and it's subtle style of humor, it produced a great season one.

Winner: Shameless

My favorite thing about this dramady is the fact that they really want their characters to evolve and grow. Sometimes TV shows keep the characters personalities the same over the years when that doesn't happen in real life. It's very clear where everyone started when the series began and looking back now, they have all grown up, taken different paths and have built their futures based on their pasts which is what helps make this series so fantastic.

Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series- Cable Networks

Nominees:

- Game of Thrones
With it's book basis Game of Thrones just shines and has brought in a whole generation of viewers much like myself that initially had no interest in watching a series about kings and dragons and made it the most important show on Sunday night. They aren't afraid to kill off some favorite characters which always keeps it interesting because no one is safe. Plus their female characters are empowered and come off sometimes even stronger than the men.

- Orphan Black
This show always impresses me with it's ability to come up with so many diverse characters that are all played by the same person. This season has added a whole extra element to it after finding out that the Castor boys are really the clones brothers.

Winner: Game of Thrones

This show is really one of a kind because it's written based on a series of fantastic books and only changed to make better TV. The characters are all completely different and they evolve throughout the seasons and the series. With their fearlessness to kill off characters, their strong women and the wide variety of characters, this series has forever changed the world of pop culture.
