The Muppets: Episode 1- "Pig Girls Don't Cry"
Trailer Review:
I'm very much a fan of the handheld-documentary style TV series (like The Office and Parks & Recreation) which for this series follows around The Muppet cast and crew for the Miss Piggy's late night series "Up Late With Miss Piggy". The trailer looks good and kept me laughing so this is one of the new comedy shows that I am most optimistic about for fall.
Episode 1- "Pig Girl's Don't Cry" Review
Let me start by saying that I have no nostalgic attachment to The Muppets. I never really got into it growing up and the two recent theatrical releases are probably the only Muppet movie's I've ever seen. After watching the pilot I realized that as much as I like the documentary style, it wasn't the best choice for this series. It felt too long and drawn out and most of the jokes in the pilot episode were featured on the trailer and the others just fell flat. I think that they should have gone with more of an SNL/Robot Chicken skit-style show where they would have a lot more time to showcase their jokes in say, three 7 minute skits instead of one big long story. Think of the all the AMAZING 5-7 minute parodies that Sesame Street has released (Aveggies, Game of Chairs, House of Bricks, Birdwalk Empire, Upside Downton Abbey, Homelamb, Desperate Houseplants, 30 Rocks, etc). When you think about it Sesame Street's target audience is children and The Muppet's target audience is adults but yet Sesame Street found a way to impress both children and adults while this pilot episode fails to impress even one of these demographics.
6/10
