One Big Happy: Episode 1- "Pilot" Review
I went into this show knowing it was produced by Ellen DeGeneres so I figured it would be a hit. Sadly though, I think it missed it's mark.
I like that the dynamic of the series is original, a lesbian is trying to have a baby with her best friend who falls in love with another woman. The textbook for the term "normal" families used to be a mother, a father and their children and I'm so happy that this era of TV is able to show that "normal" is actually any family that loves each other unconditionally.
Elisha Cuthbert is great as the lead role of Lizzy as well as Nick Zano as Luke. They both have great comedic timing and they are both able to articulate what they are feeling through facial and body movements. The supporting cast however leaves MUCH to be desired.
The problem with the series is that it just isn't funny. I'm pretty sure I only laughed out loud once or twice through the pilot and was mostly annoyed by the fact that the studio audience (or laugh track) wouldn't stop laughing. Several times I had to ask Kyle "why are they laughing? Did I miss something". We will give the series another chance with episode two because as well all know sometimes pilots just aren't the same as the regular series episodes.
NBC has only ordered 6 episodes as of now and I just don't see them extending that amount to a full season order.
C+
