Game Time! Penguin Freeze-Tag Game Review

Penguin Freeze-Tag

Year: 1991

Ages: 5-10

Players: 2- 4 players (For the purpose of this review, there was 2 players)

Set Up Time: < 1 minute

Playing Time: Took us 7 minutes.

Object: Be the first penguin to catch one fish of each colour and return to the penguin club.

Review:
+ The little pawn penguins are super cute and it was so clever to have an ice block that they get frozen in when you land on the same space as another player. Literally, a little "ice block" gets put over your penguin (see picture three).
+ The game is very simple for the young kids and the board is very bright and colourful with storybook style drawings.

- It's awesome when you get to freeze another players penguin but it's a nightmare when yours gets frozen. In order to remove the ice block, you have to roll a 1 or a 6, which can take forever. In the time it took me to get unstuck from the block and roll the correct number, Kyle made it to three different fishing holes and my game was essentially over. I think they should do something like Monopoly where you roll the dice three times and if it doesn't come up the right number then you get to move anyway. Or maybe have it where if you give up one of your coloured fish and than you can become unfrozen. Either way, the rules need to be changed because it can take forever.

- I hate when exact count is involved with games. I just don't find any purpose in rolling the dice and moving back and fourth over the final space because you rolled an odd number but you need an even number to land on the ending space. It makes the game feel so much longer without actually accomplishing anything.

Overall:

Penguin Freeze-Tag was a lot better than I had expected when I had picked it to play. Not only do I love penguins, but I also think it was a brilliant idea to have a little "ice block" that can fit right over the penguins when you land on the same space as another player. The kids will love the bright colours and the storybook drawings and although the rules for getting unstuck from the ice block aren't the best and you have to use exact count on the spaces, it doesn't deflect from the fact that it's a really decent kids game.
