Manhattan Love Story: Episode 1- "Pilot" Review
After having watched the trailer, I knew I had to give this series a shot. I'm a huge fan of Analeigh Tipton (America's Next Top Model) and I couldn't wait to see her get the lead role.
I always seem to come across shows where I feel they wrote the main character based on me. So many scenes, like when she uses a status update instead of a Google search or when she sends the wrong text message to the wrong people, are things that I have done in my recent past. Some of the thoughts that run across her mind, I've already thought of ("Am I crazy if I use capitalization and punctuation in texts?") and some of the things she does, I've done (make long lists of things I'd like to do). I think they just captured me in TV form.
I loved the Dana Hopkins (Tipton) character and didn't mind her date's character Peter Cooper (Jake McDorman) but her two friends/roommates were unbelievably annoying. I found more things in common with the show than I found laughs and for a pilot episode of a romantic comedy series, it should of had much more comedy. The plot also felt recycled from pretty much every other romantic comedy out there, with the exception of constantly hearing their thoughts. I watched this episode with a guy who didn't think it was anything special, didn't connect with any of the jokes and felt that Dana (Tipton) seemed to quite and shy to be a main character. I actually found it refreshing that she seemed more down to earth and less in my face.
Overall, I love seeing shows that unknowingly input my personality into their main characters but aside from that fact, this show brought very little to the table. As much I as I enjoyed seeing parts of me on the screen, my TV schedule doesn't have any time for shows that are only mediocre. It will probably bring in the young female audience, but I don't think it has enough to sustain any other demographic. I predict that this Love Story, won't end happily ever after.
Grade: B-
