Halloween Edition: The Being (1983) Movie Review

The Being (1983) Movie Review

**SPOILER ALERT! This review contains the movie ending**

When a company begins dumping toxic waste into a small towns water supply people residents start going missing and strange things begin to happen during the Easter holiday season.

Based on the poster, I assumed I knew what I was getting myself into, a cheesy creature movie. It ended up being worse than I had assumed. Between the dream sequence of the detective's car turning into a helicopter and a woman riding on a broom and the fact that it wasn't scary nor funny, this movie was a disappointment, even with my lowered expectations. The movie is only an hour and twenty minutes but it drags on making it feel more like two hours.

Throughout the movie, parts of the being are shown and he is seen living in holes in the ground and turning into green watery goop when in direct light. The viewer just sees quick clips of his arms or body but never the whole being until the final chase scene. They should have just kept the being completely hidden from the viewers because when the his face was revealed it was clear that it was a rip off from the movie Aliens with it's many teeth, its head shape and the saliva that was dripping from it's mouth. The only difference is that it has one human eyeball in the middle of it's head.

The worst scene in the movie is when Detective Mortimer Lutz is seen locking his girlfriend (Laurie) in a jail cell so that she won't try and help him get the being. Clearly he wasn't using his head because if the being has appeared and tried to attack her in the jail cell, she would have had no way to escape. The only funny part is after the Detective kills the being, he ends up on the roof and the first thing that he does is he throws his hat up in the air. Why? Running away from the building, eating a large piece of cake and moving to a new town would have been my plan. Not throwing my hat in the air to celebrate.

At the end they had set up for a sequel by having another being hand reached out of the toxic dump site. Luckily, there was never a sequel. The other strange thing about the ending is that fact that it gave an updated account on where all the living characters were and what they were doing since the end of the movie. This is typically something that is done when movies are based on true events or real people. There was no need to update me on the characters when they are fictional.

Overall, this movie brought nothing new to the table and left me longing to watch Aliens again.

Grade: D
