Game Time! Dinosaurs Gotta Love Me! Game Review

Dinosaurs: Gotta Love Me! Game Review

Year: 1991

Ages: 6+

Players: 2-4 (For the purpose of this review, 2 people played the game)

Set Up Time: 4 minutes

Playing Time: Took us 9 minutes

Object: Be the first to feed baby his food or bottles and try to make him smile.

Review:
+ I love that not only is it a 3D board, but it's a replica of their kitchen in the TV show. Fantastic idea.
+ You can play as Charlene, Robbie, Fran or Earl.
+ Not only is the board 3D but there are more interactive pieces with it. Going around the board you collect creatures which you place into the top fridge slot one at a time. Each time you put one in the fridge slot you spin the spinner on the side of the fridge once, which will either release a dice or not. If you get the dice released, then it will land on a picture showing if you get a jar of baby food, a baby bottle or nothing for Baby. You take the food/bottles (if the dice says you get them) and when you get to Baby on the board you put the food into the slot in front of him and turn the spinner above his head once per item you put in the slot. If it lands with Baby's face smiling than you did a good job and you win. If not, than you will need to try collect more baby food/bottles and try again.

- Worst thing with 3D board games is that there is a much greater chance of the cardboard ripping or tearing and having to use tape to keep it together, which could alter the functionality of the pieces. With these 3D pieces also having interactive features, it could significantly change the ability to play the game properly.

Overall:
In the end, this is my new favorite game that I didn't even know existed. I loved having the 3D board be the actual kitchen set from the show as well as getting able to play the game as Charlene, Robbie, Fran or Earl. The interactive 3D features added in something extra and made the game more interesting. 24 years later and luckily Kyle's 3D board still holds up and as long as it continues to hold up, this will be a game played in my house for many years to come!

Eric Hutchinson- "Pure Fiction" CD Review

Eric Hutchinson- "Pure Fiction"

"Let's tell the world all the things we've done
Falling in love in the setting sun
I got a song and a smile so bright
I'll make you wish you were here tonight"
- "Tell the World"

Year: 2014

# of Songs: 10

Favorite Songs:
- "Tell the World"
- "Goodnight Goodbye"

Least Favorite Songs:
- N/A

Overall:
This was a fantastic album with a contagious beat throughout. It has a slight retro sound and is the perfect album to put in your car and listen to on repeat. Of course I love the song "Tell the World" (Growing Up Fisher's theme song) but there were no songs that I disliked or wouldn't want to hear again.

#TBT Autographs! Dan Gheesling

#TBT Autographs! Dan Gheesling (2013)

We were lucky enough to meet Dan twice in the span of a few days. We met him at a casino charity event and than later that week at MacEwan for his speaking presentation. He is such a fantastic uplifting guy with so many positive and motivating messages plus he's the ONLY celebrity to always tweet me back! Although I totally understand why he wouldn't necessarily want to do another Big Brother season, this fangirl can always hope he does!

PS: If you haven't read any of his books yet, you should.

TV Opening Sequences: The Jetsons

The Jetsons (1962-1963)

Originality: 5/5
Plain and simple, it was perfect to set the cartoon in the future. The fact that everyone is riding in spaceships (which can send out separate people pods), they have places like High School and Shopping malls along with electric pedways just puts so many original ideas into one place. Plus I have always loved how George could make his spaceship into a briefcase. I need one of those!

Theme Song: 4/5
I liked this song as a kid as much as I like it as an adult. Though simple, it's introduction of the characters into the song makes it easy to remember who's who and fun to sing along with.

Informative: 5/5
From watching this intro you know all the characters and how they are related, the fact that they are living in the space era and where every character spends their days. That's quite a lot of information to pack into 55 seconds.

Game Time! Dennis the Menace Board Game Review

Dennis the Menace Game

Year: 1993

Ages: 5+

Players: 2-4 (For the purpose of this review, 2 people played)

Set Up Time: 1 minute

Playing Time: Took us 7 minutes.

Object: Race around Dennis's neighborhood to collect your rope, tape and wagon to nab Switchblade Sam first.

Review:
+ Game board is colorful and the printing on it is large enough which can be seen from every angle around the board.
+ Instead of most kid games that just require you to get to the finish first, this game requires you to make three stops around the board for your rope, tape and wagon. So when you have collected your three items you need to be the first to get to Switchblade Sam which gives the game lots of opportunities to change up who is in the lead and keeps the older players interested with lots to do. Each space on the board is labeled with something to do like "Margaret asks you to kiss her. Lose a turn", plus there are also Mr. Wilson cards.

- There are four Dennis pawns you can play as. The downside is that the colors are not very distinctive and even though there were only two players, it was hard keeping straight who was who especially with the blue and purple colors that look very similar. Maybe I'm just getting old?

Overall:
This game is essentially made for children of the 90s who's first exposure to Dennis the Menace was the movie this game is based on. The board is bright, colorful and has plenty of large wording. Though the Dennis pawn colors aren't very distinctive, at least they made it more than a basic board game by having you collect items, take Mr. Wilson cards, follow the instructions on whatever space you land on and having to nab Switchblade Sam first. Not only would kids enjoy this game but whatever adults are stuck playing with them should remain entertained.

Kid Rock- "First Kiss" CD Review

Kid Rock- "First Kiss"

"Cause it reminds me of my first kiss
And those days that I always miss
Tom Petty on the radio
Going steady with nowhere to go
No money just time to spend
An old Chevy and a couple friends"
- "First Kiss"

Year: 2015

# of Songs: 10

Favorite Songs:
- "First Kiss"
- "Johnny Cash"
- "Drinking Beer With Dad"
- "One More Song"
- "Say Goodbye"

Least Favorite Songs:
NONE!

Overall:
I cannot get over just how AMAZING this album is. I consider myself a pretty tough judge but this album had me wrapped around it's little finger from the "First Kiss". The thing is everybody grows up, everyone changes and Kid Rock is no exception. My favorite thing about Kid Rock is that his style has evolved. When I was in the junior high/high school rebel music phase, he was there with "Cowboy", "Bawitdaba", "American Bad Ass" and "Cocky" and I dug his rock/rap style. Now that I'm older, I'm in love with his softer rock/kinda country sound and his emphasis on reminiscing lyrics. I don't think there is any other artist who I feel evolved with me. That's why I have such a hard time these days listening to bands like Linkin Park or Eminem. I changed and they didn't and although I have nostalgia for their old songs, their new songs just don't affect me in the same way. Overall for me, this album is perfect and there is nothing about it I would change. I hope "First Kiss" blows up the charts because it's the best song I have heard in a long time.

One Big Happy: Episode 1- "Pilot" Review

One Big Happy: Episode 1- "Pilot" Review

I went into this show knowing it was produced by Ellen DeGeneres so I figured it would be a hit. Sadly though, I think it missed it's mark.

I like that the dynamic of the series is original, a lesbian is trying to have a baby with her best friend who falls in love with another woman. The textbook for the term "normal" families used to be a mother, a father and their children and I'm so happy that this era of TV is able to show that "normal" is actually any family that loves each other unconditionally.

Elisha Cuthbert is great as the lead role of Lizzy as well as Nick Zano as Luke. They both have great comedic timing and they are both able to articulate what they are feeling through facial and body movements. The supporting cast however leaves MUCH to be desired.

The problem with the series is that it just isn't funny. I'm pretty sure I only laughed out loud once or twice through the pilot and was mostly annoyed by the fact that the studio audience (or laugh track) wouldn't stop laughing. Several times I had to ask Kyle "why are they laughing? Did I miss something". We will give the series another chance with episode two because as well all know sometimes pilots just aren't the same as the regular series episodes.

NBC has only ordered 6 episodes as of now and I just don't see them extending that amount to a full season order.

iZombie: Episode 1- "Pilot" Review

iZombie: Episode 1- "Pilot" Review

As a HUGE fan of writer Rob Thomas and his Veronica Mars series, I was very excited to watch the pilot episode for iZombie, which I have to say, was better than I expected. It's very much a mix of Warm Bodies (showing the human and compassionate side of the zombies), Veronica Mars (with a strong female lead, slightly dark humor and smart writing) and Angel (where Cordelia would get visions and Angel would solve the crimes, here Olivia gets memories when she eats brains and she helps Clive solve crimes).

Basically, a medical student goes to a party where bad drugs are given out prompting a zombie outbreak. She get's scratched by a zombie and winds up waking up in a body bag as a zombie herself. She trades in her job at the hospital for a job at the morgue and breaks off her pending engagement for fear of passing on the zombie gene to her fiance (Major). The only person who knows what she really is her boss (Dr. Ravi) at the morgue who has noticed parts of brains go missing and catches her in the act of heating them up and adding them to her noodles. However, the downside to her eating brains is that she gets the memories and characteristics of the person she eats (in this episode she becomes a kleptomaniac and can speak Romanian). They convinced the cop (Clive) who's looking for information that she's psychic and able to see visions which helps him solve crimes.

Overall, I really enjoyed both the human aspects of the zombie life (as opposed to Walking Dead where they are just mindless drones) and the strong female lead (who I didn't even realize played Vivian Scully in Masters of Sex!). I'm very excited to see where this series leads and next week's episode in which the preview showed that Olivia may not be the only zombie around!

It's good to know that even zombies have to deal with work, love lives and nosy family members who think they know what's best!

TV Opening Sequences: Charles In Charge

Charles In Charge (1984-1990)

Originality: 1/5
There is nothing original about this intro. Classic "sitcom" style which gives every character a few seconds on screen when their name appears featuring clips of them from the series as well as group shots in between the actor introductions.

Theme Song: 4/5
The theme songs words are written for this show and describes who Charles is, why he's in charge and who exactly he's in charge of. It's both catchy and 100% based on the plot of the show.

Informative: 2/5
Aside from learning that Charles is in charge of the kids in the family nothing else is explained, but really, I'm pretty sure most people could have figured that out from the title itself which means it didn't really do it's job. Your first introduction to any series is the title and the second is the opening sequences. If you don't learn more from the opening sequence than you already knew from the title, than it's kind of a fail.

Game Time! A Day With Ziggy Game Review

A Day With Ziggy

Year: 1977

Ages: 7-10

Players: 2-4 (For the purpose of this review, there were 2 players)

Set Up Time: 1 Minute

Playing Time: Took us 4 minutes.

Object: Be the first player to get back to start.

Review:
+ If you land on the same space as someone else, the pawns are made so you can literally jump on another pawns head to make it around the board faster.

- Nothing happens. The board is a giant clock where Ziggy's Start and Finish spots are both at 7. Whoever makes it around the board once and lands on Finish first wins. You don't have to collect anything, you don't have any challenges to complete, this game is over within minutes.
- Even when you land on a Ziggy Card Space, they are unimaginative like "Ziggy slipped on a banana peel. Go back 3 spaces"

Overall:
This is the most boring board game I have ever played. Why they suggest the starting age for this board game to be 7 years old is beyond me. This game takes no skill and no strategy. Basically whoever rolls the highest numbers to move the most spaces will win. If this is in fact what A Day With Ziggy would be like, I'd rather watch paint dry.

Kira Isabella- "Caffeine & Big Dreams" CD Review

Kira Isabella- "Caffeine & Big Dreams"

"And then I see a Coke can

And I think of that county fair

Yeah I fell for you right there
Those nights, those eyes, your laugh
All that from a Coke can"

Favorite Songs:

Least Favorite Songs:

Overall:
Another fantastic album by the young Kira Isabella. With her amazing voice it's hard to believe that she's only 21. This is an album for the first timers; First loves ("Heaven"), first times ("Quarterbacks") and first heartbreaks ("Coke Can"). This album perfectly signifies the story of every young woman's coming of age.

The Baby-Sitters Club Series Review

The Baby-Sitters Club (1990) Series Review

First of all let me just say how utterly THRILLED I was to find this on Netflix over the weekend. I've been waiting for many many years to be able to watch this series again and I couldn't have been more excited. I believe jumping up and down and squealing was involved.I used to borrow these episodes from the library back in the 90s and they were sleepover favorites.

Watching it again all these years later I've come to a few conclusions:

1) The filming quality is terrible. It makes the show look a lot older than it is.
2) Looking it up online I was quite surprised to find that it's actually a HBO show, which is why all of the episodes are 28-ish minutes in length. Apparently, even as a kid I enjoyed HBO better than regular networks.
3) If this series had come out on a wider kids platform like YTV it may have done a lot better. It only had 13 episodes but I firmly believe that if it had been made more available and on a network that aimed at tweens/teens, this really could have been a success. What girl didn't want to be part of the BSC? The book series was huge in the 90s and I'm sure this series could have been as well.
4) This has to be why I sucked in school. My brain is filled with useless theme songs, trivia and movie quotes to be able to hold any other information. What's the difference between a republican and a democrat? I have no idea. However I know every word of the theme song by heart as well as the names and job descriptions of all the girls in the BSC (even 25 years later). My Social Studies teachers would be so proud....

Overall, even with the sucky quality it was filmed in, my love for this series is unquestionable. It's a tragedy that this series was only 13 episodes because it had the potential to be a massive success back in the 90s. Thank you Netflix for bringing back the series I've waited a very long time to watch. It's comforting to know that my friends are always there.

TV Opening Sequences: Weeds

Weeds (2005-2012)

Originality: 5/5
The opening is original and for the most part it's an exact replica of our society showing people doing the same things day after day after day. We all grow up to join society as individuals and end up becoming clones of each other and slaves to the daily grind.

Theme Song: 5/5
I love this theme song because it's both original and memorable. You will never forget the words "ticky-tacky little boxes" even if you want to.

Informative: 1/5
Since the opening is typically the first thing you see of a show it's important to give some information based on the show and this opening just doesn't do that. Aside from the shadow of weed growing near the sidewalk right at the end, it doesn't show characters or give any idea what the shows about.

Game Time! Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Board Game Review

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Board Game Review

Year: 2000

Ages: 14+

Players: 2-8 (For the purpose of this review, there were 2 players)

Set Up Time: 1 Minute

Playing Time: Took us 8 minutes

Object: Take on the role of human or vampire in a battle for control of Sunnydale.

Review:
+ You can play this game with up to 8 people

- You don't get to choose your character, it's assigned at random (I want to be Buffy dammit!). Also every character is associated with a color, also at random, so you don't get to pick your colored pawn either. (Which made it very difficult for me who ALWAYS picks the red pawn to remember that I was the yellow one)
- All players get a day power number and a night power number which will either give them more power to beat their opponent in the daytime or at night. However (especially when playing with only two players) a problem with this game is that if you randomly get assigned a character with higher power numbers (The Master) and your opponent gets randomly assigned a character with low power numbers (Giles), the person with the low power numbers has no chance of winning.

Overall:
I think it's funny that the suggested age to play this game (14+) is higher than the suggested age to watch the TV show (13). Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my all time favorite TV shows and sadly this game really has nothing to do with it and took much longer to figure out how to play it, than to actually play it. Maybe having more players would make it more enjoyable but it was hard enough to find one person to play it with me let alone seven others.

Overall:
I fell in love with Meghan Trainor and her Title EP which came out last year so I was beyond excited to listen to the full album and it was awesome. I love that they mixed today's sound with a vintage feel throughout the whole CD. This album is like the sugar high you get after you've eaten too much candy. I think Meghan will become a much needed voice of this generation by preaching self-love and not settling for less than you deserve.

Repeat After Me: Episode 2 Review

Repeat After Me: Episode 2 Review

Somehow my dumb PVR started taping the series starting at episode 2 and not episode 1. Luckily for me though this episode featured my girl-crush Kristen Bell as well as Michael Bolton and Justin Bieber. Although this concept has been done to death with celebrities pranking real people (Punk'd, Deal With It) it depends on how compelling each celebrity is with their scenario as to if they can pull it off or not.

My favorite thing about Kristen Bell is that she really puts it all out there. She's not shy, not afraid to embarrass herself and that's what makes her a fantastic celebrity for this show (and just a fantastic celebrity in general!). The best part of her sketch was where she tells the (painting hanger?) to bring the picture of her husband closer to her where she proceeds to kiss it and then french kiss it. This girl is pure comedy gold!

I did enjoy Michael Bolton's scene where he talks into a banana like a cell phone and serenades an orange in the grocery store with his song "When A Man Loves A Woman". I especially love seeing how the person took out her camera right away and tried to get him on video or in pictures. My only problem with this scenario is that the fact that had I been at that grocery store, I wouldn't have known who he was. I'm in my twenties and I can honestly say I would have thought he was just some old guy taking out his mid-life crisis on the fruit.

Justin Bieber's sketch was my least favorite only because it came off slightly creepy that he kept "hitting on" this old lady who was trying to teach him to bowl. She had no clue what was going on but I'm pretty sure any younger person would have clued in. The best part was when he would walk right up to the bowling lane and just drop the ball. Plus I could totally see Justin making a documentary called "Bieber Be Ballin'".

Overall, it was better than I expected though I have to say that I'm not quite sold on Wendi- McLendon-Covey just yet. She comes across more awkward than most hosts and doesn't seem to know how to interact with people as skillfully as she should. Plus I just can't get use to her regular hair (The Goldbergs RULES!). I think the network should have waited on airing this because it's more of a summer show and it will get lost in among all the regular series still airing new episodes.

TV Opening Sequences: The Magic School Bus

The Magic School Bus (1994-1998)

Originality: 5/5
There is so much that can be said for The Magic School Bus series and this intro is no exception. I really believe that they took a famous book series and succeed in making the TV show better than the books. There is nothing on TV like this series or as interesting as this intro and that's exactly how to keep kids (and adults) entertained.

Theme Song: 5/5
One of the best theme songs out there for a children's (and education) TV show. This song is original, perfectly suited for this show and will be stuck in your head for many days to come.

Informative: 5/5
Not only do you know the teachers name and the fact that they are going on a field trip in the first 7 seconds, but throughout the intro it shows different places they will go and things that they will see along the way. After watching this opening you know exactly what to expect throughout the series.

Game Time! Beverly Hills 90210 Card Game Review

Beverly Hills 90210 Card Game Review

Year: 1992

Ages: 8+

Players: 2-4 (For the purpose of this review, there were 2 players)

Set Up Time: 1 minute

Playing Time: Took us 15 minutes.

Object: Score 1 point for each zip code card collected. First to 50 points wins.

Review:
+ Love that all the characters have their own cards and number (Andrea-3, Brandon-4, Brenda-5, David-6, Donna-7, Dylan-8, Kelly-10, Steve-11, The Cast-12). The other card numbers are all the Zip Code cards that need to be collected.
+ Cards feature large print, nice pictures and easy to distinguish colors.
+ Simple and straightforward. In a two person game one player plays a card (For example a Purple Donna-7) and the next player tries to get a higher number in the same color. So if the other person played a (Purple Steve-11), they would win both cards.

- Since it's a card game it has very little to do with the actual show.

Overall:
I was obsessed with this show at a young age so this was a favorite to play as a kid (although the suggested age for this card game is 8, which is ridiculous). It's straightforward to figure out for new players with nice cards that feature all the original cast pictures. As long as you are a fan of card games, you will like this one.
